Non-Instructional Days

Please follow this link https://www.sd6.bc.ca/download/457532 to see the district calendar which includes all non-instructional days and school breaks. There are also four early dismissal days when school will dismiss an hour early at 2:00: October 22, 23, 24 (Family/Student/Teacher Interviews), and May 7 (second Interim Report to Families). The first few non-instructional days are:

Monday, September 23 – Professional Development Day

Monday, September 30 – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Monday, October 14 – Thanksgiving

Friday, October 25 – Professional Development Day

Monday, November 11 – Remembrance Day

Attendance

Please notify the office (250) 344-5513 if your child will not be at school. We will ask for a reason why your children are absent – if you get to our answering service instead of a live person please let us know in your message why your children are absent.

We routinely communicate with parents about attendance to understand prolonged or frequent absences, and support families when needed.

Clothing

Please label all clothing items with your children’s names! Golden is a small town, and many of us shop in the same places. It is very easy to mix up boots, mitts, shoes, and other articles of clothing that get taken off through the day. Our Lost and Found cupboard usually fills quickly in the fall and spring as students are dressing in layers for cool mornings and warmer afternoons.

Weather

Please dress your children for the weather!

Outside time in the morning, at recess, or at lunch may be shortened or cancelled when the temperature is below -17c (wind chill considered), or when it is raining heavily. Otherwise, we will be outside several times a day, and classes may be outside for learning during instructional time.

Volunteers

To be a school volunteer you need to have a valid Criminal Record Check, which is good for five years, and you need to be trained in our Child Abuse Reporting Protocols every year. To get a Criminal Record Check please ask for a form from the office, which you will take to the RCMP. The Child Abuse Reporting Protocol is online: https://www.sd6.bc.ca/parents/child-abuse-reporting-protocol-and-volunteer-code-of-conduct-training

Fair Notice Pamplet

We are committed to a safe and supportive environment for all – students, families, and staff. Please visit https://www.sd6.bc.ca/download/421592 to learn about our processes for addressing threats of harm.

Alexander Park Code of Conduct

Our Code of Conduct is on our school website https://apes.sd6.bc.ca/for-students/code-of-conduct. Please take time to review it at home. Teachers will review the Code of Conduct with students in age-appropriate ways.

Special Items from Home

We recommend that children leave special items (toys, trading cards, etc.) at home to prevent damage, loss, and disruption of learning time. The school is not responsible for any loss or damage to special items brought to school.

A Message from Public Health/Golden Health Centre: Please ask parents to check their child’s head for headlice, as the community has seen an unusually high number of children hosting them this summer. These pests do not carry disease but do spread by crawling and can be a nuisance. Head lice can be treated in one of the methods described at https://www.interiorhealth.ca/sites/default/files/PDFS/head-lice-treatment-tips-for-parents.pdf.  If more help is needed, parents can call the Golden Health Centre at 250-344-3015 or one the pharmacies.

If you have questions, please ask your classroom teachers.

Sincerely,

The Alexander Park Team
